Public Lecture & Engagement on Digital transformation in Engineering & Built Environment Education
ABOUT THE TALK
The digital transformation of the Engineering and Built Environment (EBE) sectors presents both a challenge and an opportunity for education in Africa. In this public lecture, Dr. Amanda Filtane explores the critical need to integrate digital tools, emerging technologies, and data-driven decision-making into curricula to build a resilient and future-ready workforce. Aligning with the vision of The Africa We Want, this discussion highlights the role of digital literacy, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Digital Twins in fostering innovation, sustainability in EBE education. The lecture will also examine strategies for bridging the digital divide, ensuring equitable access to technology, and creating an education system that empowers African graduates to lead in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
ABOUT DR. AMANDA FILTANE
Dr. Amanda Filtane is a seasoned Construction Manager and academic, renowned for her expertise in Construction Business & Project Management as well as Digital Construction, including Building Information Modelling (BIM). Filtane has dedicated her career to improving efficiency and excellence within the construction industry.
For the past 8 years, Amanda has consistently taught and engaged in numerous research engagements at the Department of Construction Economics and Management, where she imparts her extensive knowledge and experience. Before joining academia, Amanda held various industry positions within the discipline of Construction and Project Management, for both private (contractor and consulting firms) as well as public sector institutions. Armed with a BSc (Hons) in Construction Management, an MPhil in Building Information Modelling, and a PhD in Construction Business Models, Dr. Filtane brings a unique blend of academic insight and practical wisdom to her teaching, research and consulting pursuits.
Outside of academia, Dr. Filtane actively engages in training and development initiatives for emerging contractors, rural and township skills development: focusing on enhancing business acumen and project execution skills. Her collaborations with various NGOs underscore her commitment to fostering growth and sustainability within the construction sector as both an active global citizen as well as an engaged scholar, with an appreciation of local context and local solutions.
Dr. Filtane is a member of the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), reflecting her professional stature and dedication to excellence in the field. Amanda is also the founding director of Built Environment Clinic, a Non-Profit Company focused on Student and Graduate Development towards Employment, Entrepreneurship and Professional Registration of all Engineering and the Built Environment candidates. As well as the Director of Qhamisa Academy – school of passion, where she designs upskilling and continuous development programmes for people, organisations and institutions. She is the Director of Dilinte Group, a professional consulting firm, with a special focus on digital project delivery and productivity methodologies.
